New iPod touch arrives in Singapore
14-09-07

SINGAPORE: Surf with your iPod with just one touch of your finger.

Apple fans will be able to do that, and soon, with the new evolution of iPod line, the iPod touch. To be on sale by the end of September, the iPod touch features for the first time, WiFi networking and a 3.5-inch wide screen with multi-touch interface that allows users to find and enjoy their music, videos, photos and more with just the touch of a finger.

The functions and designs of the iPod touch are similar to the iPhone because the technology came from the breakthroughs seen in the iPhone. Little surprise that it has been dubbed an iPhone, without the mobile capabilities.

The touch-screen iPod in 8GB and 16 GB, sports a slick casing that's just 8mm thin but packed with surprises. As Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO aptly put it, "People are going to be amazed at how thin it is and how much it does."

For starters, the iPod touch boasts a built-in accelerometer which senses when the device is rotated and will automatically display photos, websites, or videos in their respective landscape or profile aspect ratios. It also has the ability to allow users to zoom in and out on the screen by pinching the image with their fingers.

What sets apart the iPod touch from others in the iPod family is the built-in WiFi that allows users to launch into Apple's Safari web browser which comes with custom Google and Yahoo search functions. Also included is a YouTube application for fast wireless access to millions of free videos.

Apart from the iPod touch, Apple has also polished its iPod product line aimed at boosting year-end holiday season sales.

The iPod nano now comes in five new colours, including green, silver and special edition RED, and features a larger, clearer (204 pixel) screen that should come in handy for the new extra on board - games.

There is also the sixth generation iPod Classic with 80 GB or 160 GB of storage in an all-new metal enclosure.

Like the iPod Nano, the iPod classic will also be bundled with three games, the new Cover Flow interface to flip through the stored digital music and video and longer battery-life on a single charge.

Creative launched credit card size ZEN
29-08-07

SINGAPORE: It may be the size of your credit card, but the latest Creative ZEN launched Wednesday in Singapore, promises a ‘magical experience’ for users to store their music, videos and photos.

Images will also appear more life-like and have a razor sharp definition with its 16.7 million colour support on its large 2.5-inch colour screen.

In addition to music in MP3 and WMA formats, the Creative ZEN is the first Creative player to support AAC music and unprotected iTunes plus tracks from the iTunes Store.

This means that with just a click of a button, users can enjoy the ease of transfering and playing back their favourite tunes from their existing AAC music library.

With its featured SD Memory slot, users can enjoy virtually limitless additional storage capacity and easily bring new music, video or photos to the player.

President of Creative Labs Inc., Craig McHugh, compares the new Creative ZEN with its award-winning Creative ZEN Vision:M, "The Creative ZEN immediately gets your attention because it has the same size screen as our award-winning Creative ZEN Vision:M, but it’s so much smaller, lighter and thinner."

Meanwhile, Account Executive Alvin Tan, a movie buff, said the product’s biggest draw for him is its 2.5-inch screen, which will provide greater viewing pleasure.

The Creative ZEN also includes a built-in FM radio with 32 station presets, a voice recorder and a personal organiser to sync contacts, to-do lists and your calendar to Microsoft Outlook.

The Creative ZEN will hit retail stores, including the CREATIVE Store, at Marina Square, Plaza Singapura and International Business Park next month, in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB models.

Many hoping government will opt for liberal arts college
26-08-2007

SINGAPORE: As Singapore considers the form its fourth or even fifth university will take, many are hoping the government will opt for a liberal arts college.

Contrary to popular belief, a liberal arts college does not always mean a Humanities-focused education.

Some top liberal arts colleges in the United States are actually well-known for their Science and Engineering programmes.

One distinguished alumnus of a liberal arts college is Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who got his Masters in Developmental Economics from Williams College in 1967.

In Singapore, National University of Singapore (NUS) has been replicating some elements of the liberal arts college experience in its University Scholars Programme (USP), which started six years ago.

Like most liberal arts colleges in the US, the USP takes in only about 200 students every year as intake is highly selective.

Only one out of every four who apply is accepted, and these students represent the top five percent of their cohort at NUS.

Another similarity is the focus on a broad-based curriculum, with emphasis on thinking skills.

This means students must be exposed to all fields – Sciences, Engineering, Information Communications Technology, Arts and the Humanities.

At some liberal arts colleges, the broad-based curriculum takes up all the graduate requirements.

At the NUS University Scholars Programme, the curriculum is 30 percent of graduate requirements.

S Veerappan, a student in the University Scholars Programme at NUS, said: "To me, I am trained as an engineer, so the benefits of a broad-based curriculum will mean that I get to explore different domains such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and this gives me lots of different perspectives."

"We find students coming out of the USP to be able to think on their feet, to be largely communicative, to be able to deal with ideas and engage with them. So one good advantage is that it doesn't necessarily prepare you for any one career. In a sense, it prepares you for many careers," said Professor Lily Kong, vice provost at NUS.

Like any liberal arts college, the NUS programme also has a low student-to-faculty ratio and a closely knit student-faculty community.

"With a small class size, we are able to have more time to interact with each other, have group discussions and group projects as well, which will enhance our growth as we integrate ideas from different perspectives," said student Rachel Ng.

Based on the many companies that come to NUS to recruit every year, it is clear that an education with elements of the liberal arts college model is well sought after.

University of New South Wales Singapore campus to shut in June
24-05-2007

SINGAPORE: The University of New South Wales (UNSW) will close its campus in Singapore next month.

The announcement came less than two months after its grand opening.

The school said it was facing a financial shortfall of $15 million a year due to lower-than-anticipated student enrolment numbers.

Its target was 300 students in its first semester. But it only got 148 students, 100 of whom are Singaporeans. If it were to continue building its campus in Changi, it would have to borrow $140 million.

The school said both factors led to an unsustainable financial burden and it decided to call it quits in Singapore.

Students have already paid their fees, which range between S$26,000 and S$29,000 a year.

UNSW says these students will be offered a place at its home campus in Sydney. There will also be scholarships to help with the cost of travel and accommodation.

UNSW has already invested over S$22 million (A$17.5 million) in its Singapore campus.
